A New Era in Nursing Regulation – CRNNL & CLPNNL Merge to Form NL College of Nurses

St. John’s, NL

The College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CLPNNL) are proud to announce their official merger, forming a single regulatory body: the NL College of Nurses.

This historic unification creates the largest health care regulator in Newfoundland and Labrador, overseeing more than 10,000 Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Registered Psychiatric Nurses across the province.

The decision to merge follows years of consultation, and planning, with a shared goal of strengthening nursing regulation, improving efficiency, and enhancing public protection. The NL College of Nurses will continue to uphold the highest standards of nursing practice while streamlining regulatory processes under a single organization.

“This is a significant milestone for the nursing profession in our province,” said Lynn Power, Executive Director of the College of Registered Nurses of NL. “By coming together, we are better positioned to respond to the evolving needs of the health care system, support nurses in delivering safe, competent care, and ensure that the public can continue to place its trust in the profession.”

The new College will maintain a strong focus on regulatory excellence, ensuring all nurses—regardless of designation—are accountable to the same core principles of professionalism, ethics, and competence.

“This merger is about more than operational alignment; it’s about building a stronger, more unified future for the nursing profession in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Wanda Wadman, CEO and Registrar of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of NL. “We are excited about this new era and are committed to transparency, collaboration, and accountability while continuing to serve the public interest with integrity.”

The formation of the NL College of Nurses will be effective as of April 15th, 2026. All regulatory functions, including licensure, practice standards, professional conduct, and continuing competency programs remain unaltered during this transition.
