Emergency License – COVID-19
Continuing Competence Requirements

Nurses seeking an emergency license must be able to provide safe, competent,
compassionate, and ethical care despite being away from the work environment for a
period of time.
CRNNL has identified specific continuing competence requirements as a part of emergency
licensure in response to COVID-19 that will allow the nurse to prepare to safely re-enter the
workforce and prepare for currency of practice.
The nurse must complete a declaration, as part of the Emergency Licensure application,
declaring that they have completed all Continuing Competence requirements:

Review current regulatory documents, legislation and other CRNNL resources
related to COVID-19. Nurses must review the following regulatory documents that
RNs and NPs are expected to adhere to fulfill their professional and regulatory
obligations regardless of practice setting or domain of practice:

Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners (2019);
Canadian Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses (2017);
Scope of Nursing Practice: Definition, Decision-making and Delegation (2006);
Documentation Standards (2010);
Medication Management (2018) (where applicable to emergency role); and
Review CRNNL’s COVID-19 resource page available at

practice setting.

limited to:

Provide an undertaking to participate in all orientation activities and a preceptorship
and/or mentorship offered by the employer to ensure appropriate opportunity to
acquire new competencies required for role and to refresh previously familiar
competencies.
