Amendments to RN Regulations Enhance Interim Licence Options

September 11, 2015

On Aug. 31, ARNNL Council approved amendments to the Registered Nurses Regulations (2013) to provide a further interim licence (“Interim Licence-II”, “IL-II”) for persons who are unsuccessful in the first writing of the NCLEX-RN exam. Prior to this amendment, the Regulations required that the interim licence had to be automatically revoked from an individual upon failure of the RN licensure exam. These amendments were approved by the Minister of Health and Community Services and enacted on Sept. 9, 2015.

Individuals practicing on IL-II licences are, however, subject to specific conditions and restrictions approved by Council that are built into the IL-II Application. ARNNL recommends that persons applying for an IL-II should carefully review the IL-II Application which requires mandatory action by both the applicant and their employer before the Application will be processed.

Further information for individuals wanting to apply for an Interim Licence-II is available by emailing If employers have any questions, please contact ARNNL at (709) 753-6040 or email
